WILLIAM LAURENCE BERGSMA (1921–1994)

William Laurence Bergsma was an American composer known for his lyrical clarity, expressive contrapuntal writing, and refined modern tonal style. Educated at Eastman after early studies at Stanford, he taught at the Juilliard School before serving as Director of the School of Music at the University of Washington. His works include operas, orchestral scores, chamber music, ballet scores, and widely respected piano works. His students include Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Karl Korte, and Jack Behrens. Bergsma received two Guggenheim Fellowships and numerous national awards. His music remains admired for its craftsmanship, beauty, and emotional integrity.
